Congratulations, you have finally received the keys to your brand-new home. A new life awaits, and you can’t wait to buy your dream furniture, lie down on your designer sofa and catch up with your favourite football matches… not so fast. There are a few things that you need to do before starting your renovation and fitting out.

Here are some guides to ease your mind:

1. Checking for Defects

There is a warranty period called the ‘defect liability period’ which allows homebuyers a period of 18 to 24 months to check and report any defects and poor workmanship as stated in the Sale & Purchase Agreement.

It is best to arrange a joint inspection with the developer when the house is empty, to mark out any defects such as wall cracks, water leakage, damaged floor tiles, electric socket and water outlet in working condition, etc. It is easy to allow the developer to fix the defects before you move into your new home.

2. Apply for Utilities

Before moving into your new home, you will need to apply for utilities such as electricity supply, water supply, telephone, and internet services.

3. Space Planning

Seek expert consultation for home décor ideas to plan and create your beautiful and practical home. It is best to finalise the renovation or interior concept that you wish to do before you move in.

Please remember to submit a house renovation plan for the local authority’s approval (commonly for landed properties) before allowing your contractor to start work.

4. To Install Security & Surveillance Camera

You might think, why spend extra when I am already paying monthly maintenance fees for the security guard at your residence? Well, the trick is that you can never be too careful.

It doesn’t cost much to install a surveillance camera these days, and it can be easily accessible from your mobile devices. It gives you and your family added security and peace of mind.

5. Deep Cleaning

Once you have progressed into your renovation, you will want to do a thorough cleaning before you move in all your furniture and belongings. You would want to do this because once your furniture sets in, it will be hard to do wet cleaning, and many corners will be hard to access.

Make sure to hire a good cleaning team to remove all the stains and leftover paints from your renovation. Make sure to include sanitization service, especially if you have kids or the elderly in your family.
